(Razor Digital)
2008
What is it?
A 45-minute, flowing Yoga workout from Stacy McCarthy. There is also a bonus 10-minute Yoga abs routine.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate Yoga enthusiasts. Although most of this isn't too hard for anyone who has Yoga experience, this isn't a beginner's workout. You will need a mat and either a Yoga strap or a towel for a couple of poses.
What to expect:
Whenever I see the words "Fat Burning" in the title of a Yoga DVD, I feel compelled to mention that if you want a fat burning workout, you need some sort of cardio activity, and you won't get that from a Yoga workout. Maybe you'll burn some fat if you go to a Bikram Yoga studio or take an especially intense in-person Power Yoga class, but the best a DVD can offer you is some solid flexibility and strength building. And this 45-minute Yoga routine does that quite well. McCarthy is an excellent teacher, giving you just enough information without distracting you from your center. This isn't a beginner's workout — the instruction isn't detailed enough for that — but you also aren't bogged down with a bunch of Sanskrit lingo, so if you're not into the more esoteric aspects of Yoga, then you'll appreciate this approach. The first half is a pretty basic Vinyasa-style Sun Salutation flow. You go through all the familiar standing poses: Warriors I and II, Reverse Warrior, Side Angle, Triangle, etc. You get into a little balance work with King Dancer before going to the mat for the rest of the workout — Pigeon, Twists, Shoulderstand and Bridge (with an option to do Wheel, if you are advanced enough). McCarthy wisely cautions you to back off if you're not feeling comfortable in a pose and offers you an out on the more advanced poses. The 10-minute bonus routine isn't too challenging — mainly it's some Yogi bicycles and Boat Pose, which you can modify if you wish. It's good if you need to build ab strength, too easy if your abs are already strong.
