What is it?
An 85-minute Yoga workshop/ class that explores poses which make up Power Vinyasa Yoga. Baron Baptiste instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginners and intermediates. Even though much of the terrain is basic, the instruction itself isn't — you're expected to be very familiar with the poses. The workshop is meant to deepen your experience of them, not introduce them. You will need a Yoga mat and perhaps a Yoga block.
What to expect:Because I spend most of my time reviewing exercise and Yoga DVDs, I rarely get a chance to actually go out and take a class. This workout made me realize how much I miss actually going into a Yoga studio for a good hour-and-a-half long class. That's exactly what this is. It's a workshop taught by Baptiste at a Yoga Journal conference. He takes the class through 36 poses, including the A and B versions of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations), standing poses (including Warriors, Eagle and Tree), gentle backbends, seated poses and twists, and an ending relaxation sequence that began with Viparita Karini with your legs in the air, not against a wall, and finished with Shavasana. As in any good class, you are given insight to the poses, offered subtle adjustments that make all the difference in your experience of a pose, and really connect with your breath. Baptiste offers a few surprises — at one point, he flips you over from Downward Facing Dog so that, without even realizing what's happening and with far less effort than you thought you needed, you're doing a three-legged upward Bow. While this workout moves a bit more slowly than other Power Vinyasa Yoga routines, and Baptiste reminds you that Yoga is about acceptance and to honor your limitations, this is not really a beginner's class. You need to be comfortable with all the standard poses, even if you can't do them all that deeply. This routine is meant to enhance the experience of Yoga that you already have. The only thing I missed was the actual, hands-on experience. There were a couple of times I wished that one of Baptiste's helpers would come out of the television and adjust me. But that's why Yoga studios exist. A DVD can't do it all — while this one comes as close as any, you still do need an occasional dose of in-person instruction.
