| Yoga Journal's Yoga Step by Step, Volume 2 |
Yoga Journal's Yoga Step by Step, Volume 2(Yoga Journal) 2004 What is it? The second in Yoga Journal's instructional series. This workout focuses on backbends, twists and flexibility. Included are a 35-minute segment to teach the poses and a 20-minute routine that puts all the poses together. Natasha Rizopoulos is the instructor. Who is it for? Advanced beginning and intermediate Yoga enthusiasts. This DVD is best if you are also taking classes in person, since a couple of the moves are advanced and best introduced with a live instructor. You'll need a mat, and depending on your flexibility, a strap and a couple of blocks.
What to expect: While Volume 1 of Yoga Journal's Step by Step series focused on basic poses, Volume 2 is definitely an intermediate workout. It includes a lot of backbending poses, including Camel and Upward Facing Bow (Wheel) — the kind of poses that most people will attempt only after practicing for many months, or even longer. But don't let the more advanced poses intimidate you — there are always modifications, as illustrated by Rizopoulos' helper Jason, and you are invited to do Bridge a second time instead of Upward Bow if you feel you are not ready to tackle it. As in Volume 1, the instruction is exemplary and you get lots of extras, such as "Chalk Talk," in which key elements of the poses are highlighted, and the "Practice With Jason" segment for those who want to go through the routine in modified form. This is a nice workout, different from your usual Sun Salutation-Warrior-Triangle flow, and it offers enough challenge to keep more experienced Yoga enthusiasts interested.
