(Yoga Journal)
2004
What is it?
The third and most advanced DVD of Yoga Journal's instructional series. It focuses on arm balances and inversions. As with the other two DVDs, this one has a 35-minute instructional segment and a 20-minute workout. Natasha Rizopoulos is the instructor.
Who is it for?
Experienced intermediate Yoga enthusiasts. You should really feel ready to work on poses like Handstand and Headstand. Although modifications are shown in abundance, it's still best if you are practicing these poses during in-person classes and using this workout as a supplement. You'll need a mat, of course, and probably a couple of blocks and a strap. You will also need some blank wall space.
What to expect:
There are very few Yoga DVDs that will show you the steps to take if you want to practice doing more advanced poses like Crow, Headstand and Handstand. There are even fewer that really give you helpful instruction. Fortunately, this DVD from Yoga Journal offers very thorough instruction and a load of modifications that make it possible to practice these poses at home. Each of the DVDs in this series show a model using blocks and straps to modify the poses, and another model who instructor Natasha Rizopoulos uses to illustrate proper (and improper) form. They are especially important in this routine. The poses are made safer by using a wall as support and the excellent instruction from Rizopoulos makes it possible to accomplish these poses at home. That said, this DVD should only be used as a supplement to an in-person Yoga class where you are working on these advanced poses. Only a teacher in the flesh can tell if you are really ready to try these poses and critique your form. For safety's sake, you should already have some familiarity with these advanced Yoga Asanas before tackling them on this DVD.
