Yoga Journal: Yoga for Stress(Yoga Journal) 2006 What is it? Two 35-minute Yoga sessions geared towards preventing and relieving stress, plus 3 additional, 8-minute bonus segments. The instructor is Dr. Baxter Bell. Who is it for? Beginning Yoga enthusiasts on up. You will need a mat, a pair of blocks, a strap and a couple of blankets.
What to expect: Yoga in general is known for its stress-reducing properties, but this DVD takes it a step further with two Yoga sessions especially geared towards stress relief. The first routine is the more active, "stress prevention" workout. You do Sun Salutations, standing poses and some floor poses to release tension in your body and mind. There are twists, hip openers and gentle backbends to target the areas that are most likely to hold stress, plus some balancing postures for, well, balance. The second routine is "stress relief," and is a passive, restorative session. You will definitely need all your props for this segment, since restorative poses require quite a bit of setup (your body is supposed to relax into the poses, as opposed to moving into them). Three modifications are shown for each segment, depending on how flexible you are. Included are three eight-minute bonus segments — breathing, relaxation and meditation. The breathing section is not so much pranayama as it is using the breath as a tool to relieve stress. The relaxation practice guides you through your body, releasing each muscle. The meditation is a quick sitting session in which you focus inwards and on your breath, to release your mind. Dr. Bell cues well and has a calming voice and demeanor. The poses in these sessions are appropriate for just about any level, and offer a pleasant pause to your otherwise hectic day. Other Yoga DVDs you may like:
