Yoga Journal’s Yoga Step by Step, Volume 1(Yoga Journal)
2004
What is it?
A Yoga DVD that includes a 35-minute instructional session on basic poses and a 20-minute Vinyasa-style workout that puts all the poses together. Natasha Rizopoulos is the instructor.
Who is it for?
Beginning and advanced beginning Yoga enthusiasts. This DVD is especially good if you’re taking classes at a studio and want to start practicing at home. You’ll need a mat, and depending on your flexibility, perhaps a couple of blocks.
What to expect:
The biggest problem with most “beginning” Yoga DVDs is that they throw you into a 30-minute or hour-long session and just give you instruction as you go along. You can only hope you figure things out while you’re doing the poses. This DVD from Yoga Journal gives you real instruction before it takes you through a 20-minute, mostly Sun Salutation routine. Natasha Rizopoulos offers 35 minutes of thorough teaching, and covers each pose, including modifications if you need them. Other features on this DVD are even more in-depth. “Yoga Chalk Talk” literally highlights proper form, and one of the instructors assisting Rizopoulos does the whole routine in modified form for you to follow along. There is also a segment called “Practice With the Medical Community,” which discusses the benefits of a regular Yoga practice. Even if you’ve been doing Yoga for a while, you’ll appreciate all the instruction, since it’s a great reminder of what you’ve been learning in class. If, for some reason, you aren’t able to take classes in your area, this DVD is essential.
