(Pranamaya)
2008
What is it?
A Yoga workout that focuses on the shoulders and upper back. Included is a 38-minute workshop and a full, 43-minute routine, plus bonus exercises for the wrists and hands. Jill Miller instructs.
Who is it for?
All levels of Yoga enthusiasts, although it may be a little daunting for beginners. You will need a mat, block, blankets and a handy table surface.
What to expect:
One of the biggest problems with living in the computer age is the toll it takes on our posture. So this DVD definitely has a place with anybody who spends a lot of time at a desk. Miller's approach is very thorough, from the detailed instruction for each pose for the workout to the workout itself, which is done by voiceover as Miller illustrates each pose. There's also the breathing primer (which is featured on all her Yoga Link workouts), and exercises for your wrists and hands, which are great for anyone who spends a lot of time on a keyboard. The routine itself isn't meant to be a flowing practice — it's a series of moves that may occasionally require you to find a table or other elevated surface. One move requires you to use a blanket and pull yourself along the floor — it's not really doable on a carpeted surface, but kind of fun if you're on a wood floor. The series ends with a Dolphin/Downward Facing Dog series that will complete your shoulder workout. Miller has an inordinate amount of flexibility in her shoulders and upper body (as do most Yoga teachers), so when she says not to worry if you can't mimic her moves exactly — believe her! Done over time, your flexibility and posture will improve, and you'll work all those nasty kinks out of your shoulders that you never thought you'd get rid of.
