Yoga Slim(Natural Journeys)
2007
What is it?
A 50-minute, modified flowing Yoga routine to build heat, strength and flexibility. P.J. Johnson instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning Yoga enthusiasts — not total newbies, but those who are still fairly new to Yoga. Ignore the “Slim” in the title — this isn’t a vigorous routine, and you don’t need to be on a quest to lose weight. You will need a mat, and if you are less flexible, a block.
What to expect:
Here is a pleasant routine that offers a more active take on a few basic Yoga poses. Yoga Slim keeps you gently in motion, whether you’re moving your arms in the warm-up, doing a bit of light walking cardio or practicing flowing variations of Warriors I and II. The goal is to build heat (producing a slight calorie burn while warming your muscles), and build muscle, since these moves do enhance lower body strength. As with all “weight loss” titled Yoga routines, this really isn’t much of a slimming tool. A nice way for Yoga and exercise beginners to get stronger and more flexible, yes, and that will help many ease into a fitter lifestyle. But on its own, it’s not going to help you drop pounds — you need a good low-calorie eating program and more intense cardio and strength training for that. This DVD will keep you active on days you’re feeling a bit lazy, or if you’re not ready to tackle more challenging routines. It’s a good beginner-level workout. You spend the first 40 minutes on your feet, and the last 10 minutes divided between Plank variations and relaxation. If you already have some good beginner-level Yoga DVDs and would like another DVD for your workout library, this one might be a nice addition.
