Yoga Wisdom for Neck Pain and Tight Shoulders(Bayview) 2005 What is it? Two Yoga routines — a 36-minute "beginner's" workout and 48-minute "intermediate/ advanced" workout — that target tightness in the shoulders, neck and upper body. Allison Nolan instructs. Who is it for? Advanced beginning through intermediate Yoga enthusiasts — you need to have experience with Yoga for both these routines, and even the "beginner's" workout can be a bit challenging if you are stiff. You will need a mat, a strap,
What to expect: One thing that you learn from Yoga is that everyone's body has its own challenges, and that your own body's quirks often change over time. These two workouts are geared towards those who want to address tightness in their shoulders and neck. (This mostly likely includes anyone who spends a lot of time in front of a computer.) Allison Nolan leads you through two routines — one more basic and the other longer and a bit more advanced — that, while not focusing 100 percent on your shoulders and neck, certainly do a lot to stretch and release tense muscles in this area. She starts off both routines by warming up your muscles and leading you through some Sun Salutations, then with the help of a strap, she has you loosen up your shoulders. The poses that target the shoulders, neck and upper body are similar in each routine — variations of Eagle, Cow's Head, etc. — but more advanced in the second routine. The second routine also contains a highly shoulder-opening version of Pigeon, done with a twist. Each routine also ends with a few minutes of ab-based poses, a heart-opening restorative pose (you'll need the blocks for that) and, of course, Corpse Pose. Each routine actually works your whole body, including your lower back and hips — the upper body work is the focus during about half the routines. The only thing that's a little disappointing about this DVD is the music, which doesn't really seem to fit the routines. If you find your shoulders and upper body stiff for whatever reasons — desk work, bad habits or stress — this DVD is great way to get those muscles unwound. Other Yoga DVDs you may like: |
